Tell me, who is this Dajve of which you speak?
I must know
I am this Dajve. I have many faces, and most of them are sour. By day, I am a mild-mannered PHP developer living in the sunny city of York, UK; By night, I am some kind of super-hero - roaming the mean streets of Internet, righting wrongs and wearing my pants outside my trousers.
For your pleasure, I will detail some of these many faces below.
The Developer
I've spent the last 10 years playing with the internet, in a very non-descript way for the most part. 5 years ago, I started a project with a friend. This project required a news system which we could update ourselves and, after failing to get the Perl News script we were using installed in the first couple of hours, I decided it would be a good idea to instead learn PHP and roll my own.
This was simultaneously my greatest and most stupid decision to date.
Since that point, I've spent way more time than is probably healthy, writing, reading up on why my code is wrong, re-writing... ad naseum. My interests have expanded to the whole web development umbrella and I'm currently working as lead developer / server administrator for AJ New Media.
Outside work, my current love-child of the intarweb is a little open-source project which will be revealed here later in the year. All I will say for the time being is that I am designing for myself but there seems to be a niche for it. I guess that's how all the best open-source projects start.
The DJ
DJ is a little bit of an ego-inflated term. DJ's PA is probably more accurate considering my role is lighting, writing playlists, opening beers, taking requests and manning the decks in times of crisis.
For those interested, all of this takes place at Club Distortion at Fibbers (York Barfly) every Saturday night. And for those really interested, you can keep up with the Distortion shenanigans via
twitter.com/clubdistortion - where we live-tweet the set list each week
blip.fm/clubdistortion - where we live-blip most of the songs as we play them for you to sing-along at home
last.fm/user/clubdistortion - where we put the radio on random and kick back during the week
our Facebook group - where you can leave comments, requests and abuse.
Update 12th June 2009:
OK, so I guess I am now officially a DJ. Not a very good one, but I am the last line of defence at Fibbers new monthly metal night, Carnage, run every second Thursday of the month.
You can find us on Facebook, here.
The... whatever
I am also other things to other people depending on the time, place and phase of the moon. Among the other interests which take up my copious free time are:
York Rising Stars Theatre Group
I am currently thesping things up with York Rising Stars theatre. Upcoming performances include the premiere of Platform 9, a new Denis Westgate production set on a 1950s railway platform. It is very exciting and will be hitting York in July.
