Let me talk to you of a time long ago. A time of innocence, when petrol was reasonably priced, when pirates sailed the tubes of the internet rather than the Horn of Africa, and when Facebook was still in vogue. Come, boys and girls, and let me talk to you of 2008.
More specifically, let me talk to you of New Year's Eve 2008, when I made but 2 resolutions:
- Get fit enough to dance again (still ongoing but not failing)
- Learn something new every day
I mentioned resolution 2 to a friend, who said she'd had the same idea a couple of years prior and had got 3 weeks in before it fell by the wayside. My first attempt made it 10 days before failing. I had intended to write down each day what I had learnt, but after 10 days, I had no diary and couldn't remember 2 days earlier let alone 10.
After grabbing this domain and brainstorming things to do with it, I had plans to start the graphic novel I've had milling around for over a year, now. The only problem with that idea is my drawing ability. I have a great story planned out, I can picture the characters, the scenery... I just can't express what I see accurately on the page.
Webcomic art is expected to improve with time, especially for novice artists, but this isn't something I want to mess up.
So, I decided to combine the failed resolution with art practice and learn something new, 3 times a week, and create some kind of comic to go with it. For bonus points, I will be getting into the routine of drawing regularly.
I don't promise quality and, once the graphic novel begins (at some indetermined point in the future), I don't promise strict adherence to schedule, but I will be doing my best to stick to this schedule. If only because I have never managed to keep a new year's resolution and this has to count for half?
